
Broadcaster Barbara Walters has stunned America by fessing up to being involved in an affair with a married senator throughout the 1970s. During a recent interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show, aring Tuesday, Walters admits she was “infatuated” with Republican Edward Brooke, adding, “He was exciting. He was brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington.”
Brooke took office in 1967 and was the first African-American to be elected to the Senate since 1870. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.
Walters will apear on Oprah Winfrey to discuss her new memoir, Audition, which covers her long career in television, as well as her off-camera life.
