Kathy Griffin vs. Jesus?
Comedienne
Kathy Griffin has found herself in a bit of trouble when accepting her award at the Creative Arts Emmys last Saturday. She said, "A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. So, all I can say is, 'suck it, Jesus!' This award is my god now!" E!, which is airing the ceremony, has said that they will not broadcast the "offensive" remarks, and will show an edited version of Kathy's speech this Saturday night. Catholic League President
Bill Donohue called Kathy's remarks a "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech."
What do you think of Kathy's remarks? Boundary-pushing and funny or totally offensive?

Lighten up, douchebags--it's called "comedy". I laughed. She's funny. More importantly, it's also called "First Amendment right to free speech."
Why are there so many hypersensitive boobs out there that take offense at anything and everything?
It's the cretins who "thank Jesus" with such hypocritical piety that make me sick.

Kathy was just expressing herself, what's wrong with that? If these hard line religous fanatics don't think their faith is enuff to stand the tide of non-secular rhetoric then then they should crawl into their panic rooms right now.

Its not a matter of comedy, its a matter of respect. I believe she still could have made a funny joke with out saying suck it jesus. I believe that jesus has a sense of humor, maybe he wasn't even offended... BUT that part that may have offended people the most was to use a tastless, crude joke that had no creativity at all and it is offensive to people that hold that subject sacred to them. Whats sacred to you? How would you feel if some one brought up and mocked something that was sacred to you? Or are we a complete ignorant, juvinelle country who believes that just because we have the right to say what ever the hell we want, we can go ahead and loose respect for eachother as human beings?

Why is it that lately many celebrities, comedians, actors/actresses, etc., have become repulsive personalities. They have so much going for them and then they have to open their mouths and spout out a bunch of vulgarities and straight out dumb remarks. Are they so insecure that they feel they need more attention from us (the public)? Because if this is the case they are so sadly mistaken. Whether or not they believe it some people respect them more for their "real" selves and not "attention-getting" speeches that include idiotic remarks like this one by Kathy Griffin. There is nothing wrong with self-expression, however, when you put "religion" into the mix you better believe you're going to change alot of people's minds about you, your act and especially your character. Isn't there any "class" among the people we the fans have made famous? Maybe instead of acting classes they need to teach etiquette, mannerisms and respect.

It is sickening that someone who has so much to be grateful for would make such a remark. Too bad she got the award. I am sure there are plenty of other entertainers who would have been happy to get such an award and express their appreciation in more appropriate way.

I usually find Kathy Griffin a fairly intellectual and funny person. But her remark about Jesus is just another example of how much antipathy there is for Christians in America. I'm sorry she doesn't have an appreciation for Jesus. It's sad! Really Sad!

When did we start living in a religious dictatorship? Oh, yeah, after the 2000 election.
Kathy Griffin is known for her big mouth, and what usually upsets people about her routines is that what she's saying is true. At the risk of entering into a theological debate, what about the people who do not win entertainment awards, lose the super bowl, or die in a bridge collapse? Does Jesus hate them? Are winners holier than the rest of us? That entertainers and athletes thank 'god' has been a running joke for as long as I have been alive. Censoring Kathy Griffin is, frankly, hilarious, and serves as nothing more than free advertising (something Ms. Griffin has always been happy to receive). Describing this funny act as 'hate speech' is insulting. Has Bill Donohue not gotten the memo? The religious takeover of the U.S. has failed.
Why are we still so afraid?

Holy shit - really, we get our panties in a twist over nothing. I am tired of Christians (of which I was born one) being so stupid.
Kathy Griffin knew what she was doing and who would be most vocally inflamed by the few words she had time to utter - you people are being played. Let it go and rise above, prove out your divinity.
There is a holy war coming, and its dumb vs dumber.

Kathy Griffin is one of the funniest people around today. I was so hoping she would be brought in to take over for Rosie on "The View." But behind all the laughter, Kathy has also suffered a tremendous loss recently when her Dad passed away. Anyone who follows Kathy's fabulous show, "My Life on the D-List" on Bravo, knows Kathy's Mom & Dad were very involved in Kathy's life. And when she broke up with her husband Matt, Kathy really turned to her parents for support. So to lose her Dad, and have her marriage hit the skids all in one year, anyone would lash out at God and Jesus. So even though she delivered the line in her typical sarcastic humorous way, there may be some truth to it. So let's cut her some slack. She's still the best.

I've never cared for Kathy Griffin at all. She's as far from funny as they get and it surprises the heck out of me that she has been able to make a living in comedy. After watching "Last Comic Standing" over the past few months, I've been amazed at how comedians feel they can't be funny unless they're offending some group of people. Going as far as to make fun of people driving drunk, which there is nothing funny about that. The best comedians were the ones who could talk about real life situations that we all could relate to, but weren't offensive in any way. For her to say what she said, it's obvious that she's got problems...but most of us do. Unfortunately, she hasn't figured out that Jesus could be the answer to her problems, but maybe one day she will.

I think it is amazing that comedy icons like Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason and Charlie Chaplin (just to name a few) managed to make people laugh without ever using vulgarity or insulting someone who's only crime was trying to spread love and peace in a very disturbing world. (That would be Jesus). Yes, we have freedom of speech in this country but just because you can say something, doesn't mean you should. True classic comics of today, like Tom Hanks and Bill Cosby will be around long after, "what was her name again," is searching for work. You see we have another freedom in this country...spending our money where we want. 80% of this country believes in God so it is not good marketing (in fact...just plain stupid) to insult many of the people who buy the products her sponsors sell or buy the tickets for her show. I will choose to spend my money elsewhere. Those of you who like this type of ....gee I hate to use the word humor here....feel free. I for one will forgive her...but I sure won't support her.

Yes, she has a right to say what she wants. But at the same time people can be offended by it. While we have a freedom to speak our minds there is no guarantee we can say what we want without reaction. The fact is it wasn't a funny remark. It was simply meant to be controversial and garner reaction. Truth is if she had said something about another religion such as Islam or Judaism there would be an outcry so great she'd be making the talk show circuit to apologize profusely to all of her Muslim and Jewish friends.

Religious dictatorship? Are you serious? Compare the U.S. today and, say, the Taliban. People taking a stand for something they believe in is what makes this country great. Why do you marginalize Christians for defending something they hold sacred. Do you realize that if you let people trample all over things you hold dear...they will!
You are right when you say that good comedy usually has some truth to it...that's what makes it funny. And yes, some entertainers seem less than sincere when thanking God for their accomplishments. So why not mock her fellow actors? Why tell Jesus (who spoke only of love and forgiveness) to "suck it?" I agree with the other responses who invited her to try to get away with saying the same thing about Judaism or Islam. Come on, Kathy, let me hear that "joke." Let me see just how "brave" you really are.
The truth is that she is banking on Christians will do what they are taught by Jesus to do...forgive. I do forgive her and the rest of you (regardless of your religious beliefs) that think it is OK to not have some moral code to live by, that it is OK to say or do whatever you want, that it is wrong to stand up for what you believe in.
I am not saying I am a better person than Kathy Griffin, but I certainly won't support her until I hear a sincere apology. Losing her marriage and her father does not excuse her actions. I hope that one day she will see that she was wrong here. Not because enough people got offended or her ticket sales went down, but because she truly finds the goodness of Jesus one day.

Regarding Kathy Griffin's remarks about Jesus --
It is vulgar and very offensive, but the saddest part is that she doesn't know how very much Jesus does have to do with her award. Although, I understand she may have been speaking in a "joking" manner, it's sad to think an award is her God. I hope she will allow Jesus to come into her heart and know that He is Lord and loves her very much before her days on this earth are over. That way she can hear of how Jesus was a part of that award from the pain-free, joy-filled eternity of heaven, instead of hearing about it in pain-filled eternity hell.
I hope this comment is in the correct place for Kathy Griffin. I think Fran Marie and Ani hit the nail on the head. Nothing else needs to be said. I couldn't add anything better to what the two of them said.

All these 'holier than thou' nay sayers should just take a deep breath and see the comment for what it is, a comic shot at the hypocrits that get up on stage and praise Jesus/God for the award they are receiving. I guess that some day she will live to regret those words if she doesn't change her ways!!! JESUS is the only one that can save her. She is the biggest NOTHING in all of Hollywood!!! I don't know why she got an award ,anyway. She is the biggest NO TALENT in Hollywood. I wouldn't walk out of my front door to see her if she was doing a show in the road in front of my house. As a matter of fact, I would call the police to have her removed for disturbing the peace.

I agree that there are those who get on stage and thank God or Jesus but aren't sincere. That's fine - make fun of those people. The point is she didn't use her comedic skills to do that. Instead she decides to make a statement that was very obviously meant to create reaction. I am simply amzed that when Christians take offense to something said about us or our beliefs we are being "holier than thou". She could've been funny and made fun of those people you call hypocrites. Instead of relying on her humor she relied on controversial remarks to get her some press time. Looks like it worked.

I found the your statement to be childish. If I were have to won an award as an African American and came up on stage talking about Budhists, Muslims, etc. I would have been booed off the stage. Most people that get up on stage to thank God are people of color. However, I don't think she realized quite frankly what she was saying. Because if she did, she would have realized how foolished she looked up there. She could have simply thanked everyone for her reward. This really does not surprise though because people seem to be getting away with everything now a days.

I did find myself laughing out loud at some of the reader comments here, however; moreso than I usually laugh out loud at Kathy's routines (very few comedians are really funny to me). Knowing Kathy, she'll probably make a comedy routine out of our comments. Of course, I doubt I'll watch it.

If defiling a name of a "sacred" figure in someones religion is not viewed as insensitive, hateful, and disrespectful by those defending those comments, then God help us all. I happen to like Kathy Griffin and am glad she won an award for the work she has done to make her show successful. But to get on stage and make the comments she did was just plain wrong. Jesus has done nothing to her. If her anger is at Christians, then go after those Christians that went after her. No need to denigrate (regardless of what religion you follow) someones deity like that. BUT, I guess that's what this country has come to. Since equating terrorism with ALL folks who practice Islam, I guess I am not surprised that the next attack would be against Jesus. Funny thing though - in all the diatribe spouted by "terrorist" who practice Islam, I've never once heard them denigrate Jesus. Score one for Kathy!

Wake up and get reason some of you prudish people. Jesus, gods, etc., are all pretend, made up by superstitious people who lived in fear thousands of years ago. The sooner we get religion out of the world, the sooner we will all be living peacably together. Think, it's good for you.
Miss Griffin's remarks were totally uncalled for and very offensive. She will give account to God for them. Matthew 12:36 "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." Galatians 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

Not sure who she was adressing, the people that thanked Jesus for their success or Jesus. All in all she was not PC, is this acceptable? This is a person's choice of words. No matter how it is pharased she did over step the comedy line. Being a comedian does not give anyone the right to hurt others. Words sting more then physical blows. Why should those remarks be considered "offensive" ?
NOT everyone is a religious fanatic. Its okay for a celebrity to gush on and on about how much jesus and god had in winning some award, but its NOT okay for someone else to say they actually earned the award themselves?
So "freedom of speech" and "freedom of religion" ONLY apply to the religious fanatics? We're really only free to believe in what bible-belters say we should?
Stand strong Kathy Griffin! Don't let the religious fantasists budge you one bit!

I think Comedienne Kathy Griffin remarks about Jesus were very unintelligent and not very wise. Even if she does not believe in the reality of Jesus it would be wise not to get on His bad side just in case He is real (of course I believe He's very real and alive in the hearts of millions)! Why pick on a giant if you don't know if he is dead or just sleeping? I think the late Richard Pryor learned (if he ever did) this the hard way. She should apologize to her Jesus believing audience and especially to their Jesus.

I don't think she thought about it or planned it. I think she got caught up in the moment, was trying to be funny, started down one path, and then the wrong words came out. Comedians DO make mistakes and I think she'd be the first to say that she didn't mean to offend anyone. She's a comedian, leave her alone! She's entitled to her beliefs just as anyone else. The extremist Christians have been shoving Jesus "in our faces" for a long time. She's just saying that Jesus is not who she thanks for her success. There's nothing wrong with that! She can thank or not thank whomever she pleases. Fanatics are the ones who have an issue with what she said. No one else cares.

I've watched Kathy Griffen's show a number of times, and most of her show is based on trying to get publicity anyway she can, especially in the tabloids. She plans everything in advance to be noticed, and if her plans go awry and she fails at getting the attention of the "papps," she's off to the next scheme. She uses everything she can to be as shocking as she can, especially everybody's favorite expletive, the "F" word, as often as possible, because it does get the attention of most. Her behavior on that award show is just another attempt to shock and get her name in the news, just like a child who doesn't get enough attention with positive behavior, will use negative behavior to attain the same result. It's the same old story.......anything for attention. It's pretty pathetic when it comes right down to it. Pushing the envelope is Hollywood's favorite game these days.
NO one is born a Christian!
You have to be born again, John 3:3 "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

She was talking about the SON OF GOD! May GOD have mercy on her because she has to answer to HIM, and may you learn a renewed respect. It sounds like your standard isn't any higher than Kathy's! I believe the Bible also says, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Poor Kathy couldn't take half the crap she dishes out to other people for the sake of "trying to be funny" . This time she picked on the wrong subject, Jesus Christ!
It's not Kathy's standard or the right of free speech or anything else that matters; it's God's standard that we will all answer to someday. If you don't believe that you better be very sure, because your eternity is riding on it. I suggest you start searching for the truth. The real truth, the ONE truth, God's truth, before it's to late. Prayers and blessings to you, poor soul.

The comment "Suck it Jesus" is not funny at all. But most of the time she is very funny. Because she raves on and on about it, I think even Kathy realizes she made a big mistake. Why? Because it was offensive and in very bad taste and not funny to educated people. That's all I can say about that.
